Its by no surprise that the use of structural steel frames in zimbabwe is not a common sight..Infact i dont know any multi-level building framed within structural steels.. Whilst I am a bit under-informed about the reasons why zim has never explored this fast-erecting structural system... May I challenge all of engineers and architects to seriously consider the use of steel frames in buildings.. Let me mention that steel frames offer opportunities for designers to flirt with form quite distinctively.. We are living in a contemporary world, where shape, form, digital technology just to mention a few influences have an ernomous impact on design and the environment.. With Reinforced concrete as the main frame in use , I dont see how designers can be awarded the freedom to fully explore design enless they employ a structural steel frames. The birth of so-called organic architecture , a very post-mordenist concept entirely relies on thin skins, flexible & permeable structures, and free flowing forms.. Am I correct to suggest tht zimbabwe now needs to review its pre-independence design standards and adopt some newer methods with particular interest to structural/civil engineering design.. The now finished JOINA centre in Harare is a total victim of zimbabwe's old-fashioned frame systems.. I wud like to beleive tht building wud hve been built in a fraction of time at its original height (cnt remember hw many were the original storeys), HAD it been done in a steel frame.. Elsewhere world wide, buildings spring up like seeds germinating coz of the quick-to-erect frames they use..DUBAI structures are an eye-catching example We wud be happy to see ZIE take this on board and ponder with us here.. can we have some QS and estimators opinions too..This might jus have to do with cost...

I think its a good idea .Its a technology which has only been exploited 6yrs ago in the UK and we have seen the idea being adopted across the whole achitectural design practice of office and residencial buildings. However the advantage with the UK is that the weather is more mild to colder and steal expansion due to heat is not that much but if the same technic is used in Zimbabwe where temperatures are increasing every year due to climate change the steal itself and the design methods have to be improved to carter for the temperature increase and its impact.I think the air conditioning and temperature controls will be much more expensive in zimbabwe compared to the Uk if steal is used. Since the design technic is new we still do not know any negetive effects this will have on buildings but on the positive side , its cheaper and it can withstand earthquackes. Correction mr musika.. Steel frame in UK has existed for over 4 decades now.. where are you geting yo stats from.. If Australia has relatively high and long annual temperatures..how do they get away with steel framed structures..not mentioning Dubai..tht desert is even hotter! How confident are you mr mbare about the 'cheapness'' of using steel frames.. do u have any references we cn cross-check??

Yes you are right it has been in existance for about 50yrs in the UK but this was only applied to warehouses etc but not residencial. This change started recently but this is based on my observation.I have been in the UK for all my life and i only noticed the trend recently.Correct me if i am wrong. I think its common sense that building using steel frames is cheaper in the UK and the time it takes to build is very short which cut the cost of construction and thats a big plus in the UK where labour cost is high-common sense. I can not comment about dubai and australia , i have not been there yet but i will do a research.
